About the Project
Sprites is a collaborative art workshop and ongoing character collectibles series.
Every weekday one new animated pixel character is added to the collection, with ideas for new characters and traits fielded from the community.
This project is still in beta so be aware that not every feature is 100% complete.
About the Community
Access to the community requires you to create one
(no previous art skills are required), either using the Sprite Editor or any pixel art software of your choosing (this can be skipped if you become a Patron, or by ). The community is also encouraged to submit their own pixel art creations to the pixel wall.
The emphasis of the community is on no-stress creativity, doodling, and just having fun by expressing yourself and sharing silly drawings in the server. Pixel art is great in this respect because it is very simple to get started, but also contains enormous depth - and through it one can learn all of the fundamentals of art, lighting, and animation in a very approachable medium.
Get started by joining the Discord server. More info on creating a doodle .
Collection & Collectibles
The Sprites collection is an ongoing series of 35x35 pixel character animations, which is updated each weekday (to start, potentially moving to daily in the future).
To fund and sustain the project, each new character is minted as an NFT (*gasp) and a
24-hour auction is automatically created for that character. Bids may then be placed on the Ethereum network for that character. The next auction begins only after the previous auction or direct listing (if no auction bids were made) has ended.
The art for each character is stored on-chain forever - meaning that unlike many other NFTs, all of the pixel data is written directly into the token's transaction itself, which is then preserved by every node in the network in perpetuity, rather than just pointing to an image hosted on some centralized server.
Editions & Patron
Editions is a companion series to the original Sprites collection that includes pieces which can be held by multiple owners. The underlying token type for Editions (ERC-1155) is different from the original Sprites tokens (ERC-721), as each Sprites collection token can only ever be held by a single owner at a time.
Editions are a more involved series of artworks that are less rare, allowing more community members to participate in the collectibles aspect of the project.
All Patrons automatically get each new Edition collectible delivered to their unique Ethereum address whenever one is released. This secure address is tied to whichever login method you choose (email, Google, Discord, etc.) behind the scenes, and requires no setup or knowledge on the user's part. You only need to to view your collectibles.
For all non-patrons, Editions are made available for public minting for a set number of days after release, and then are no longer available. This method requires knowledge of Ethereum and cryptocurrency and is not recommended for everyone.
About the Artist
This is a solo-run art project created by digital artist and animator Moclaw [claw.art], with occasional help from some lovely developer friends. As such all support is hugely appreciated, with the absolute pinnacle of support being a monthly Patron subscription - the perks of which can be viewed here.
Add a Doodle & Submissions
Follow these steps to join the Sprites community via submission, or submit new art:

1. Go to the Sprite Editor and make a rough pixel drawing or animation.

2. Click the "Download" button to save the new drawing to your device or computer.

3. If you are joining the community for the first time – drop your new image file in the #activate channel in the Discord. Otherwise, drop your images into the #add-pixels channel.
Community submitted doodles are posted to the the Wall(type "no post" when submitting your doodle to skip post to Wall).
Alternatively, if you'd like to join without submitting a doodle, you can instead, and a Discord activation code will be provided to you.
On-chain Art & Metadata
For collectors and nerds - the pixel art for each Sprite is stored permanently on-chain at the time of each character's minting. It is retrievable along with the character's basic metadata at any time using a blockchain explorer like Etherscan or BlockScout.
Follow these steps to pull the original pixel or metadata for any Sprite:
Step One.Find the mint event of the Sprite you want to lookup. You can do this quickly in collection viewby navigating to the 3-dot menu under any Sprite and clicking the "Copy" button. Then click "Copy Mint Tx" when prompted.
Step Two.Go to any Ethereum blockchain data decoder - for example, Etherscan's Input Data Decoder - to decode the metadata embedded in the transaction. Just paste the value you copied into the empty field and click "Decode".
That's about it!You will be provided with a long string of base64 data which contains all of the Sprite's art and metadata. You can then simply copy and paste that long string into your browser bar to view the metadata in a readable format.
Pulling the Pixel Art.The art itself is contained within its own string in the "pixel_data" field. You can simply copy and paste that string into your browser bar to view the pixels in their original 35x35 size. You can then scale up the art infinitely with any image editing software (like Photoshop) using a "Nearest Neighbor" or simlar pixel scaling filter, which keeps pixels sharp and lossless. You can also scale up the pixels easily with a web tool likeLospec's Pixel Art Scaler.
Auction & Disclaimer
The auction portion of this project is intended for users already familiar with cryptocurrency & Ethereum, and exists purely as a means for an artist to monetize his work and create something fun for collectors. The tokens released here should never be considered investments of any kind.
To take part in an auction, you will need an existing Ethereum wallet (MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, Phantom, etc.), or you canto create a Sprites wallet (you will first need to fund the wallet in order to use it in an auction).
Additional resources for learning about and creating Ethereum wallets can be found here.
